Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a slow, gentle, hands-on approach. While the original theories behind Craniosacral Therapy lack scientific support, many people find the techniques deeply relaxing and beneficial for stress reduction. At Intent Health, we can incorporate techniques inspired by Craniosacral Therapy within an evidence-based, person-centred framework to promote relaxation and overall well-being.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy (CST) originated in the early 20th century and was developed further in the 1970s. The original theory suggested that restrictions and misalignments of the cranial bones and sacrum could impact the flow of cerebrospinal fluid, affecting overall health and well-being (Upledger, 1983). Practitioners believed that by gently manipulating these areas, they could restore balance and alleviate various health issues.

However, scientific studies have not supported these claims. Research indicates that the cranial bones are fused in adults and do not move in the way originally proposed by CST theories (Hartman & Norton, 2002). Despite this, the gentle touch and focused attention involved in Craniosacral Therapy can promote a deep sense of relaxation.

Evidence-Based Benefits of Gentle Touch Techniques

While we do not claim to manipulate cranial bones or influence cerebrospinal fluid flow, the gentle techniques associated with Craniosacral Therapy can offer several benefits:

  • Deep Relaxation: Light touch can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress.

  • Stress Reduction: Massage therapy has been shown to help lower anxiety and depression measures.

  • Enhanced Mindfulness: Focusing on subtle sensations can increase body awareness and present-moment mindfulness.

Person-Centered Care

We value your experiences, preferences, and expertise when it comes to your own body. Whether you prefer a lighter touch, a quieter environment, or specific areas of focus, our RMTs are here to collaborate with you.

Our goal is to create a safe and nurturing space where you can relax and rejuvenate.

FAQs

  • Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on approach that focuses on the head, spine, and sacrum. Originally, it was believed that manipulating these areas could affect the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and ‘realign’ cranial bones. While these theories lack scientific support, the techniques can still promote relaxation and present-moment-mindfulness.

  • Current scientific evidence states that adult cranial bones are fused and do not move independently. Additionally, there's no evidence that massage can influence cerebrospinal fluid flow. However, the gentle touch used in these techniques can activate the relaxation response in your body.

  • During your session, your RMT will use light touch, primarily on your head, neck, and sacral area. The focus is on providing a calming and relaxing experience. We'll ensure you're comfortable throughout the session and encourage open communication about your preferences.

  • Generally, gentle touch techniques are safe for most people. If you have specific medical conditions or concerns, please discuss them with your RMT before your session so we can make any necessary adjustments.

  • While we cannot guarantee specific outcomes, you may find that relaxation-focused massage techniques can help reduce the frequency or intensity of tension-related headaches. We recommend discussing your symptoms with your RMT to tailor the session to your needs.

  • No special preparation is needed. You might consider what you would like to share with your RMT about your general treatment goals and preferences. This could include the style of massage that you’ve enjoyed most in the past, and which areas you would like included in your treatment.

  • Absolutely. Our RMTs are skilled in various massage techniques and can incorporate different styles into your session based on your preferences and treatment goals.
