Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a term often used to describe a preference for firm pressure. However, its meaning can vary from person to person. At Intent Health, we collaborate with you to find the pressure that feels enjoyable for you and is within the therapist’s abilities, all within an evidence-based, person-centred framework.

Deep Tissue Massage Explained

Deep Tissue Massage is a commonly used term, but it doesn't refer to a specific massage technique. Instead, it generally conveys an individual's preference for firmer pressure during a massage. This preference can vary widely among people and even change for the same person from day to day or between different areas of the body.

At Intent Health, we recognize that "deep tissue" means different things to different people. For some, it might mean sustained pressure on a specific area; for others, it might involve overall firmer pressure with oil; or a firm, slow, shearing style of massage without oil.

Our Approach at Intent Health

We prioritize clear communication to ensure that your massage experience meets your needs and preferences. Before your session begins, your Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) will discuss your treatment goals and pressure preferences with you. During the session, they will check in to make sure the pressure feels comfortable and effective.

Our RMTs are trained to adjust their techniques and pressure to suit your comfort level, however some RMTs are able to deliver more pressure than others. Whether you prefer a lighter touch or firmer pressure, we're here to collaborate with you to create a massage experience that feels right for you. If you have questions about which RMTs will be able to provide more pressure, please give us a call or send us an email so we can find the right therapist for you.

It's Not Just About Pressure

More pressure isn't always better or more effective. Excessive pressure can sometimes lead to discomfort or muscle soreness after the massage. Our goal is to find the right balance that allows you to relax and gain the benefits of the massage without causing unnecessary discomfort.

Evidence-Based Benefits of Customized Pressure

By tailoring the pressure to your needs, we aim to have a positive impact on your nervous system in a way that may lead to:

  • Reduced Perceived Muscle Tension: Satisfying levels of pressure can be an enjoyable input for the nervous system, and that can lead to a decrease in perceived tension.

  • Enhanced Relaxation: The right pressure can activate your body's relaxation response, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.

  • Improved Comfort and Mobility: Finding the most enjoyable pressure can improve your overall comfort and provide a pleasant sensory experience for your nervous system which may impact movement patterns.

Person-Centered Care

At Intent Health, we believe that you are the expert on your own body. We value your input and encourage open communication throughout your session.

Our RMTs are committed to providing a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment where your preferences and experiences are central to the treatment.

FAQs

  • Deep Tissue Massage is a term often used to describe massage with firmer pressure, however, it isn't a specific technique taught in massage therapy schools, and its meaning can vary between individuals.

  • The effectiveness of a massage isn't determined by the amount of pressure used. All massage techniques work through similar mechanisms, influencing the nervous system to promote relaxation and reduce pain perception. What's most important is finding the pressure and techniques that feel good to you.

  • Massage should not be painful. While some people prefer firmer pressure, it should always be within your comfort level. Our RMTs will check in with you during the session to ensure the pressure feels right. If anything feels uncomfortable, please let us know so we can adjust accordingly.

  • For some conditions, firm massage is not recommended. Our RMTs will work with you to develop a treatment plan that considers your specific condition, preferences, and any recommendations from your healthcare provider.

  • We encourage open communication. Before your session, discuss your pressure preferences with your RMT. During the massage, feel free to provide feedback if you'd like the pressure adjusted. Some of our RMTs are able to provide more pressure than others. Each RMT works within their own physical abilities.

  • There are certain medical conditions where firm pressure is not recommended. In some cases you may find there are specific spots that need less pressure, and others where more pressure is safe. Please inform your RMT of any health concerns or conditions so we can tailor the session appropriately.

  • No special preparation is needed. You might consider what you would like to share with your RMT about your general treatment goals and preferences. This could include the style of massage that you’ve enjoyed most in the past, and which areas you would like included in your treatment.
